Vico Magistretti

Vico Magistretti was born 6th October 1920 and in 1945 he obtained his degree from the "Politecnico" University of Milan after his initial studies at the "Champ Universitaire Italien de Lausanne". After obtaining his degree, he started working at his father's architectural office. In 1948 Vico Magistretti attended to a number of editions of the "Triennale" exhibit of Milan. In 1956 he was among the founders of the ADI, the Association for the Industrial Design (Associazione per il disegno Industriale). His works are mainly architectural and design, which include city planning and industrial design.

In 1960 Vico Magistretti started designing furniture which was produced on an industrial scale. In 1967 the first chair made in a plastic material is designed and produced.

Among the important companies in the field of industrial design that he worked with, was: Artemide, Cassina, DePadova, Flou, FontanaArte, Fritz Hansen, Kartell, O Luce, Schiffini, Thonet Vienna. His artworks are displayed in the main design exhibits in Italy, Europe, USA and Japan, not to mention that many of them are part of permanent collections in the most important museums worldwide. In fact, twelve of his artworks are part of the Permanent Collection at the MOMA of New York. Vico Magistretti has lectured in Milan, Rome, London, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Aspen, Tokyo, and San Paolo in Brasil on industrial design, was and has been appointed to many prestigious posts: Vico Magistretti is a member of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome; an honorary member of the Royal College of Art of London and an honorary member of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. He has taught at the Domus Academy of Milan and is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the Royal College Art of London.

He received many awards such as: 1951 Golden Medal received at the "9th Triennale" exhibit of Milan; 1967 "Compasso d'Oro" (Golden Compass) for the creation of the lamp Eclisse - Milan; 1979 "Compasso d'Oro" for the creation of the lamp Atollo - Milan; 1995 "Compasso d'Oro" for his career - Milan; 1970 Golden Medal received at the "Wiener Möbelsalons International" exhibit - Wien; 1986 Golden Medal received by the S.I.A.D. (Society of Industrial Artists and Designers) – London; 1997 Golden Medal "Apostolo del Design" - Milan; 2002Honorary degree in Industrial Design received by the "Politecnico" - Milan; 2003Genoa setup of an important exhibit in his honor. On behalf of FontanaArte he has designed the Ananas, Bruco, Margaret, Morocco, Silica, Tacita, Tikal and Trial lamps.
