Steven Holl
Steven Holl was born in 1947 in Bremerton, Washington DC. After obtaining his degree from Washington University, he studied Architecture in Rome and at the Architectural Association of London. In 1976 he founded the Steven Holl Architects Studio, which earned him international fame for his quality and superiority design works including: museums, institutes and residential complexes. In July 2001 Time magazine named Steven Holl "Americas Best Architect" for his buildings that "satisfy both the eye and the spirit".
Among the prizes that Steven Holl has received are: Seven National AIA Design Awards; The "Grande Médaille d'Or" in 2001; The "Alvar Aalto" Medal and The "Arnold W. Brunner" Prize in Architecture. Steven Holl was named as an Honorary Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and he was awarded with the 2002 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture by the Smithsonian Institute.
Among his most important works we can mention: The Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum of Helsinky; The chapel of St. Ignatius of the Seattle University; A new House of the Student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; The Texas Sterro House in Dallas; A residential complex in Makuhari, Japan; The Art Museum of Bellevue. His works are displayed, among other places, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the Walker Art Center of Minneapolis.
His is a professor at the Graduate School of Architecture at Columbia University in New York and he has held lectures at numbers of institutes including the Washington University of Seattle, the Pratt Institute of New York and Pennsylvania University. Steven Holl is also an accomplished author and has founded the "Pamphlet Architecture" that recently has celebrated its 25th anniversary. His architectural treatise "Anchoring", published in 1989, has gone to press three times. His most recent books are titled "Idea and Phenomena" and "Written in Water" published in 2002. He has designed the Kiasma and Triple lamps for FontanaArte.
